PRO TOUR NEWS — MEN

PUBLICATION NOTE

There are a couple of really late matches still being played at Cincinnati. But the Canadian Open is over, and it appears Cincinnati won’t end until after midnight. We’re assuming you’re more interested in the Big Matches from Canada. So we’re sending this now, and will cover the remaining Cincinnati matches tomorrow.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

* Shelton defends Canadian Open title

TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS

Canadian Open

Singles – Final: B. Shelton (5) def. (28) B. Nakashima 6-3 7-6(7-4)

This never really seemed to be in doubt. It took less than an hour and a half. Brandon Nakashima wasn’t bad, really, but he was simply out-weaponed.

This was the seventh title of Ben Shelton’s career, and his fourth of 2026, but the other three this year were all relatively small (Dallas, Munich, Stuttgart). This is his first Masters of the year — and he won it last year, also, so it’s his first ever title defense.

It’s also his first outdoor hardcourt title of the year. Dallas was indoors, Munich on clay, Stuttgart on grass, so this completes a calendar-year surface sweep. He becomes the first and only player this year to achieve the feat in 2026. He may be the only one; only Jannik Sinner is in contention (he has clay, grass, and outdoor hardcourt titles in 2026, but no indoor titles — yet).

The win takes Shelton from #10 back up to #6. He has Cincinnati quarterfinalist points to defend next week, so he still isn’t sure of a Top Eight US Open seed, but this helps his chances dramatically.

Brandon Nakashima falls to 1-4 in ATP finals (or 2-4 if you count Milan 2022), and he has never won a title above the 250 level. Still, this was the best result of his life, and it takes him to a career high #22. There is a lot to be said for power. But there is a lot to be said for steadiness, too.

Doubles – Final: Luz/Matos def. (3) Arevalo/Pavic 5-7 6-4 10-6

Somebody just made a killing on the prediction markets — assuming anyone bet on Luz/Matos at this event, which seems unlikely.

Orlando Luz came here with three titles, all with Rafael Matos. All were 250s, and all on clay: Bastad 2024, Buenos Aires 2026, Santiago 2026. Matos’s record was much more impressive: thirteen titles. But eleven of the thirteen were 250s, and the other two were 500s. And only one (Winston-Salem 2025) was on outdoor hardcourt. Nine were on clay, two on grass, one on indoor hardcourt. So this is many sorts of breakthrough all at once. Including a ranking breakthrough. Both will hit career highs — Matos apparently #20, Luz #22.

Arevalo/Pavic still have only one title this year (Queen’s), which perhaps helps explain why they struggled in this final. But they do rise to #6/#7, and although they lose the chance to rise to #2 in the Race, they are a fairly strong #3; they .have’t clinched for Turin yet, but we’d give them at least a 90% chance of making it.

Cincinnati

Singles – First Round: T. Atmane def. M. Fucsovics 3-1, retired

That’s one way to win even if it’s raining. But Terence Atmane, with semifinalist points to defend, is still in danger of falling below #80.

Singles – First Round: M. Kecmanovic def. C. Ugo Carabelli 6-3 6-3

Miomir Kecmanovic will probably need a little more than this to make it back to the Top Sixty.

Singles – First Round: M. Landaluce def. (WC) J. Draper 6-3 7-5

It’s going to be a very slow comeback for Jack Draper if he continues to pull out of half the events he signs up for and loses at the other half. The only good news for him is that he missed this event last year, so he doesn’t lose any points — indeed, he gains a few for showing up.

Singles – First Round: M. Navone def. R. Collignon 6-3 7-6(7-3)

A very nice win for Mariano Navone on a hardcourt. It’s hard to imagine him earning a US Open seed, but he keeps the possibility alive. Raphael Collignon can forget it, though.

Singles – First Round: C. Norrie def. D. Prizmic 3-6 6-1 6-4

This by itself won’t be enough to earn Cameron Norrie a US Open seed, barring an incredible number of withdrawals, but if he can somehow top Alexander Zverev in the next round, things might start to get interesting.

Singles – First Round: D. Shapovalov def. A. Mannarino 6-1 6-4

There obviously won’t be a US Open seed for Adrian Mannarino.

Singles – First Round: J. Struff def. R. Burruchaga 7-6(7-4) 2-6 6-3

Jan-Lennard Struff came here ranked just below the Top Forty, so he definitely has a shot at a US Open seed, but he will surely have to play better than this.

Singles – First Round: T. Tirante def. J. Choinski 7-6(11-9) 6-7(7-9) 7-6(7-4)

These two managed to finish in under three hours, but it was a very near thing. Jan Choinski had some grass wins this year, but in an ATP career that goes all the way back to Stuttgart 2016, he has never won a hardcourt match. None. Zilch. He has five career wins — four on grass, one on clay.
